An Apple A Day
The weather is starting to get cooler and the leaves are changing colour. It’s a beautiful season. Time for another adventure. Julie had been tossing around the idea that we should go apple picking. She has done it before, I have not. So on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon we decided to go. We called up our friend Susan to see if she wanted to join us. Of course she said yes. So we piled in the car and off we went. We visited Barrie Hill Farms, not too far from our place and they had a multitude of apple varieties that we could choose from. If we wanted to, we could have picked raspberries or corn too. They also had beautiful pumpkins and a lovely market.
We arrived at the farm, dawned our masks, bought our baskets and stood in line for the wagon ride. I swear that the wagon ride out to the orchard took longer than the drive to the farm. That’s ok though ‘cause I like wagon rides and it was a beautiful sunny day. We enjoyed the view and chatted with friendly people to pass the time.
Once we finally got to the orchard, we had to make the hard decision of which type of apples to pick. I am not that knowledgeable in the apple department so I left the decision up to Julie. We wandered down one of the Mcintosh rows and before we knew it one of our baskets was full. Well, overfull really. We asked one of the staff which other type of apple would be good and he suggested Courtland. Me being the cheeky one I decided I would do a taste test even though there were signs everywhere saying no sampling. Oh my! the apple straight from the tree was so juicy and delicious. Nothing like the ones you buy at the supermarket.
We filled basket #2 to the brim with Courtland apples. Now that’s a lot of apples! What the heck am I supposed to do with all these apples. If I ate one a day it would take me a month to get through them all. Guess I will have to blog about the recipes we make … stay tuned.
